Solution to my dilemma about a joint account
« on: September 10, 2013, 02:02:45 PM »
I am planning to apply for a consumer proposal through spergil, but I have one problem that's going to cause a problem with it. I have a tdcanadatrust joint account with my parents, which we opened up when we first migrated to Canada. My trustee told me that I can't have an account with tdcanadatrust because of the creditcard and loc I have with them. I tried to take my name off the account but the problem is that my dad isn't in the country at all and he would be needed. There is also an overdraft on the account too. I don't want to close that account cause my parents use it to pay mortgage and other things which are setup on the account. Is there anyway I could take off my name without my dad being present. I tried asking the bank about this. The only option they are giving me is to pay the overdraft in full and close the account. I keep on telling them I can't because of the reason above. One customer rep told me that if a bank power of attorney was on file then I could have taken my name off. My dad won't be able to come back to Canada for another year so can't figure out what to do. Please any advise would be appreciated.

Can you not send the forms to him by courier and have him sign and notarize them in the country he is in? You would need to ask the bank if this acceptable.
