Bankkruptcy support group in Ottawa
« on: March 25, 2009, 05:25:13 PM »
I am starting a bankruptcy support group in Ottawa, in the hope of having support meetings instead of just discussing on the Internet.
If interested in joining, email me to
bankruptcysupportgroup at gmail dot com
Let's finish with the isolation and the unfounded shame.

Thanks for your encouragement.
As I am going through bankruptcy myself, I found there are no support groups where people in the same circumstances can meet and discuss ways to cope with immediate practical problems, such as difficulty to rent accomodation, which I am going through, as well as the emotional problems, which some people already described, such as feelings of guilt and shame.
It works for all kinds of problems, from AlAnon to families of cancer sufferers, from divorced fathers unable to see their children to former soldiers. We should help ourselves. Solidarity and a non-judgemental environment do work.
BTW. I am not a trained psychologist or anything, although I do have many degrees, up to a PhD. Including a masters in Economics and PoliSci.

I am so glad that there is a support group, there is no one that I can talk to about this...Like how I got to this point or what I should do.. My second meeting with a trustee is tomorrow, it is another consultation...I am a single mom, I own my house (mortgage is larger than what the house is worth) I plan on keeping my car...I have no assests. but I am in debt for 73,000.00 when I started adding up the bills, I was shocked.. how I got to  that much debt. borrowing to pay other debts. it just kept accumulating and so did the interest..I am hoping I can be helped.. Shame, guilt, feeling like a loser yup that is me...My family would flip if they knew what I am planning on doing..I see no way out... I would like to hear from people who have just done the bankruptsy thing...

We are attending our second meeting next week and I just want it to be over with...I can totally relate to islandgirl....I don't want anyone to know what we are doing.  My biggest fear right now is that we lose our house (there is no equity in it) and that we won't be able to make the monthly payment to our trustee (combined it will be over $800!)  I know logically that we have to be accountable for our actions but it will affect my children and I feel so bad about that.
